Total, one of the world’s largest integrated oil and gas companies, stepped in to support this year's London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which left London this morning (Sunday 1st November).

Appreciating that older cars – the youngest on the Run is 110 years old – are not built to quite the same fine tolerances as modern cars, Total as Official Lubricants Partner was on hand to provide oil and any practical assistance to participants.

Mechanics from leading restorers Classic Motor Cars were supporting Total's oil stations at the Run’s halfway Harrods Stop at Crawley and Madeira Drive in Brighton.

Marc Smith, General Manager Lubricants of Total UK, said: "Total’s rich history dates back to the 1920’s and since then our engineers have been catering to the needs and specifications of generations of engines, right up to our multiple F1 world championship wins in collaboration with Williams, Renault and Red Bull.

"It was amazing to see such a moving display of cars that are over 100 years old. The oil stop at Crawley was constantly busy with participants asking for oil top ups, some of which were carried out by themselves or by our mechanics.

Smith added: "Total’s range of mineral lubricants, fluids and greases perform particularly well in classic and veteran cars. This is part of our long-term commitment to keep these historic cars younger for longer."

This was the first of a series of initiatives from Total to support veteran and classic motoring in the UK, which will see advice, special services and lubricants offered to events, clubs and owners.

2016 Royal Automobile Club 1000 Mile Trial Entry Opens

Award winning event opens for entries

In July 2014 a landmark event returned to the motor sport calendar, the Royal Automobile Club 1000 Mile Trial fuelled the public's imagination and brought communities together as it passed through their villages - it was an event that paid homage to the very first competitive reliability trial in the UK - an event that originally took place in 1900 and brought the motor vehicle to the people of the United Kingdom. The event was so well received that it was shortlisted for - and won - the inaugural 'Rally of the Year' award at the prestigious International Historic Motoring Awards in December of that year. Fast forward 12 months and the 2015 event has once again been shortlisted for the very same award, demonstrating the affection and esteem in which the event is held.

The entry has now opened for the 2016 event and like the previous year's running, the entrants are expected to be of the highest standard with competitors from all over the world already expressing interest in securing their place. The 2016 Royal Automobile Club 1000 Mile Trial forms a part of the prestigious HERO Cup for Drivers in association with EFG Private Bank, along with new sponsor Zenith Watches - who have joined the HERO Cup as Official Timekeepers of the series. The prize for the HERO Cup is very generous indeed - as well as a week's luxury sailing on board the stunning 85 foot S/Y Orianda (www.Orianda1937.com), Zenith Watches have issued a bespoke crafted 'El Primero' Open Chronomaster timepiece for the winner of both the HERO Cup and sister series 'The Golden Roamer Trophy for Navigators' - each comes complete with a unique engraving to the rear to commemorate their achievement.

Starting on Monday 11th of July 2016, competitors will arrive in Edinburgh for scrutineering and documentation before they are welcomed to the event on board H.M.Y. Britannia for a champagne reception and welcome dinner. The following five days' competition will see the 1000 Mile Trial visit many fine stately homes and exquisite places of interest as it makes its way south towards the finish destination of Woodcote Park, the beautiful country clubhouse of the Royal Automobile Club on Saturday 16th July. Passing through many of the original locations and roads used on the 1900 event, the 2016 running will visit (amongst others) Blenheim Palace, Bowes Museum, Slaley Hall and one of the truly iconic motor sport venues of the world, Goodwood.

On the opening of the entry for the 2016 event, Royal Automobile Club Motoring Committee Chairman, Peter Read commented; 'The revival of the 1000 Mile Trial in 2014 demonstrated the Club's continued involvement and commitment to all forms of motoring and motor sport, from veteran and classic to Pre-War and modern vehicles. The quality of entries in the last two years merely serves to underline what a wonderful and well-organised rally this is and the Club is thrilled to be involved once again'.

Tomas de Vargas Machuca, Chairman of event organisers HERO added; 'Winning the award for Rally of the Year last year and being nominated again this year, is a testament to the extremely high level of this event, not only from a hospitality but also from a competitive perspective. The importance of this event in automotive history is not to be underestimated. We look forward to this years' event and bringing together some of the most important Pre-War cars ever built and taking crews from Edinburgh to Woodcote Park in a quintessentially British rally.'

About Royal Automobile Club

The Royal Automobile Club was founded in 1897 by Frederick Richard Simms and its distinguished history mirrors that of motoring itself. Ten years later, in 1907, King Edward VII awarded the Club the Royal title that it still holds to this day, sealing the Club's status as Britain's oldest and most influential motoring organisation.

The Club's early years were focused on promoting the motor car and its place in society. Following the successful 1000 Mile Trial in 1900, the Club held the first Tourist Trophy in 1905, which remains the oldest continuously competed for motor sports event. The Club promoted the first pre-war and post-war Grand Prix at Brooklands in 1926 and Silverstone in 1948 respectively, whilst continuing to campaign for the rights of the motorist, including introducing the first driving licences.

In 1999 the Club demerged from the motoring services recovery division and established an independent body, the Motor Sports Association (MSA), to govern motor sport in the UK. The Club then added contemporary facilities and refurbished both clubhouses for the benefit of its growing membership.

The Club continues to award a series of historic trophies and medals celebrating motoring achievements, including the Segrave Trophy, the Tourist Trophy, the Simms Medal, the Dewar Trophy and the Torrens Trophy. Today, the Club retains a diverse membership drawn from all four corners of the globe and offers two stunning and unique clubhouses, a flourishing events programme, unsurpassed accommodation, dining, sports and golfing facilities. It also continues to develop and support automobilism through representation on the Motor Sport Association (MSA), Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and RAC Foundation, while continuing to promote its own motoring events, such as the free-to-attend Regent Street Motor Show and the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which this year take place on 31st October and 1st November.
